by Ian Davidson and Bruce Davies George R. Brown, eminent engineer and retired chairman of the Rice Board of Trustees, died Sa turday following a brief illness at age 84. B r o w n ' s c o n t r i b u t i o n s to i n d u s t r y , e d u c a t i o n a n d p h i l a n t h r o p y a r e a b u n d a n t . Brown entered Rice in 1917 with the intention of becoming a doctor , but he left the following year to join the Marine Corps. While in the service, Brown discovered what he later called his " r o m a n c e wi th e n g i n e e r i n g , " returning to school to graduate with a degree in engineering f rom the Colorado School of Mines.
